On August 20, the US Coast Guard detained the captain of the container ship MSC Jubilee IX (8,814 TEU) in the Port of Seattle. A breathalyzer test showed that his alcohol level was six times higher than the legal limit for commercial seafarers.
How it happened:
🔘 The pilot noticed signs of severe intoxication in the captain upon boarding
🔘 The pilot and first mate took control of the vessel
🔘 An inspection was conducted on board and the captain was arrested right in the port
🔘 The vessel was detained until the arrival of the relief captain, after which it set out on a voyage to Canada
Consequences:
The captain was taken to King County Jail, he faces charges of “boating under the influence”. The incident is being investigated by the US Coast Guard. The vessel itself, sailing under the flag of Liberia, is managed by MSC Ship Management
❗️Why is this important:
The violation, discovered by accident, could have led to a disaster. Only the actions of the pilot and the watch saved the situation. The incident became another confirmation of the zero tolerance policy for alcohol at sea and a reminder that the safety of navigation directly depends on the discipline of the crew.
🍔 P.S. Remember Dear Sailors, with your actions you can deprive hundreds of Ukrainian sailors of their jobs
❗️Safety at sea begins with discipline.
