The US offshore wind industry has been thrown into uncertainty following the Donald Trump administration’s decision to suspend several major projects off the country’s east coast. The pause includes several wind farms under construction and nearly completed, in which billions of dollars have already been invested.

Federal authorities explain the suspension by the need for additional review of national security risks, including the possible impact of wind turbines on military and navigational radars. While the review is underway, all active work on the projects has been effectively frozen.

The decision affected projects in an advanced stage of completion, where offshore installation operations have already been completed, cables laid, and foundations installed. For the industry, this means not only direct financial losses but also schedule disruptions, increased project costs, and a threat to jobs in coastal states.

✈️Developers and state officials warn that a prolonged pause could threaten the future of offshore wind energy in the US, as investors increasingly face political and regulatory risks even after receiving all permits.
