In Q4 2025, the Asian region recorded an increase in incidents involving smuggling and unauthorized boarding of merchant vessels.
⚓️Most incidents occurred in coastal areas and anchorages, where dense traffic, small vessel activity, and limited visibility create conditions for surreptitious approaches to commercial vessels. Particular attention is paid to nighttime and areas with intense local shipping.
Smuggling remains a key risk factor. Regional maritime and coastal authorities have identified cases of undeclared and prohibited cargo, leading to vessel inspections and increased monitoring by authorities.
🔘The problem of illegal boarding of vessels is also highlighted. Such incidents are recorded both on anchored vessels and while moving slowly. Even in the absence of violence, they pose serious risks—from threats to crew safety to potential legal consequences when entering ports.
✈️In response to the situation, coastal states are increasing patrols and coordination between maritime services. Crews are advised to maintain increased vigilance when operating in Asian waters, especially in areas specified in regional security advisories.
