The incident occurred during a solo ocean crossing. The rower was traveling across the Atlantic in a specialized rowboat when his vessel was capsized by a series of abnormally high waves. After the impact, he found himself in a lifeboat tethered to the overturned boat and sent out a distress signal.
๐ถ The signal was received by rescue services, who activated the international AMVER system to search for the nearest merchant vessel. The tanker Horten, which was in the area, changed course and spent over 12 hours sailing toward the disaster site in difficult weather conditions.
That night, the crew located the lifeboat in the open ocean. The rower was lifted aboard the tanker Horten. Despite his prolonged exposure to sea and signs of dehydration, his condition was considered stable and not life-threatening.
๐ The rescue operation exemplifies the coordinated work of the merchant navy and shore services. Maritime authorities particularly praised the professionalism of the tanker’s crew and emphasized the importance of commercial vessels participating in the search and rescue system.
