Following the discussion of engine room emergency evacuation requirements,
📄Document SDC 12/11 concluded that there is no need to revise SOLAS requirements for engine room emergency escapes.
Additionally, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations of a container ship’s engine room fire were conducted to assess:
🟠 Does raising the entry level of the emergency escape trunk have an impact?
🟠 Are there any benefits to lowering the access point?
🟠 Does an inclined ladder create additional risks during evacuation?
Result:
The presence of an emergency escape trunk with an inclined ladder has no measurable impact on the crew’s ability to safely and effectively evacuate during a fire.
That is:
✔️ Evacuation remains safe
✔️ Evacuation time is not increased
✔️ Current SOLAS requirements are technically sound
