“I worked the same number of months on two different ships. Why is one experience suitable, but the second is not?” is one of the most common questions we hear from seafarers.
Many people believe that only the number of months spent at sea is important for confirmation or assignment of a rank. But in practice, not only the length of experience is taken into account.
📌 The characteristics of the vessel you worked on are of great importance:
- gross tonnage (GT);
- type of vessel;
- main engine power;
- the position in which you worked.
For example, for some ranks, length of service is counted only on ships with a gross tonnage of 500 GT or more. For mechanics, main engine power requirements may apply – from 750 kW and above.
👉 This is why two sailors can have the same 12 months of experience, but get completely different results. For one, all of the experience will meet the requirements, while for the other, part of the experience will not be counted.
Therefore, before submitting documents, it is important to check not only the number of months, but also the compliance of the experience itself with the established requirements.
