Many seafarers have heard of the SID, but don’t always understand the difference from the Discharge Book. Although these documents are often issued together, they serve different functions.
🔹 SID — Seafarer’s Identity Document
This is the International Seafarer’s Identity Document. It is used to:
— confirm a seafarer’s identity;
— facilitate border crossings and boarding;
— confirm a seafarer’s status in accordance with international requirements.
🔹 Discharge Book
This is a document that records your work at sea: details of contracts, embarkations and discharges, as well as your seagoing experience.
Simply put:
The SID confirms your identity as a seafarer.
The Discharge Book confirms your experience and seagoing experience.
📌 Another important point: the SID can be issued separately if you need this document without the Discharge Book.
⏳ Validity:
- SID — 5 years
- Discharge Book — 10 years
If you need a Bermuda SID and Discharge Book, Seamen’s Club Ukraine can help with the paperwork.
