This is a question many professionals ask: does higher education actually help with career advancement? What prospects does it open up? Is it worth spending time on studies after years of working at sea?
📚 Here is a real-life example: a seafarer who graduated from the Technical Fleet Maritime College in 2019 has now enrolled in the correspondence program at ONMU (Odessa National Maritime University) to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Marine Navigation. In other words, it is entirely possible to continue your education after college and after starting your career at sea.
However, this raises a number of practical questions:
— what value does a bachelor’s degree offer a seafarer today?
— is a master’s degree necessary after the bachelor’s?
— how have requirements changed regarding the Unified State Qualification Exam (YeDKI)?
— how are practical training and the logging of sea service time organized?
— what is important to know before enrolling?
