A new passenger ferry incident has occurred in South Korea: the vessel, en route from Jeju Island to the port of Mokpo, ran aground near Jindo Island. There were 246 passengers and 21 crew members on board—a total of 267 people.
According to the South Korean Coast Guard, the ferry struck underwater rocks and stopped, but did not sustain serious damage to the hull. The vessel remained stable, allowing for an orderly evacuation.
All passengers were quickly evacuated. A few minor injuries are reported, but no one is life-threatening. The cause of the incident is under investigation: erroneous maneuvering, navigational inaccuracy, and weather conditions are being considered.
The incident has once again raised concerns among the Korean public, especially given the 2014 Sewol ferry tragedy, which killed more than 300 people. Authorities have emphasized that the situation is under control and that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
