According to the latest data from DNV, only 10 alternative fuel ships were ordered worldwide in November 2025, significantly fewer than the 27 orders in November 2024.

All 10 ships were dual-fueled with LNG, including six container ships and four tankers. DNV reports that a total of 232 alternative-fuel ship orders were placed in the first 11 months of 2025, a 53% decrease compared to the same period last year.

Despite the overall slowdown, LNG remains the dominant fuel:

🟢67% of orders for 2025 are for LNG
🟢20% are for methanol

Container ships account for 66% of all alternative-fuel ship orders.

📊 Currently:

🟢833 dual-fuel LNG vessels in service
🟢Another 623 LNG vessels on order

Methanol: 95 in service, 355 on order.

According to Jason Stefanatos of DNV, October saw more activity, but the overall trend for the second half of 2025 is clear: LNG continues to lead, and container carriers are driving its adoption.
