Starting October 14, China began levying special port dues on vessels with US-related connections, in response to similar measures taken by Washington.
💲 The rate is 400 yuan per net ton, rising to 1,120 yuan by April 2028.
📌 Vessels affected:
🟢 Owned or operated by US companies
🟢 US-flagged
🟢 Built in the US
🟢 With US capital of at least 25%
❗️ BUT: Vessels built in Chinese shipyards are exempt from the fee, even if they are owned by US owners.
If the shipowner fails to pay the fee on time, the vessel will not be allowed to load or unload.
🚢 Analysts estimate that US VLCC tankers can pay up to $6 million per port call in China.
