Lufthansa Group airlines have officially tightened the rules for the carriage and use of power banks during flights. The new requirements will take effect January 15, 2026, and apply to all Lufthansa Group flights.
❌ What is now prohibited on board
Passengers are prohibited from:
— using power banks during the flight;
— charging power banks from onboard power outlets and USB ports;
— storing portable batteries in overhead bins.
A maximum of two power banks per passenger is permitted.
Power banks may be kept:
— on the person;
— in a seat pocket;
— in carry-on baggage under the seat in front.
❗️Power banks and e-cigarettes are still strictly prohibited in checked baggage.
⚡️ Capacity Requirements
— Up to 100 Wh — permitted without approval;
— 100–160 Wh — only with prior airline approval.
🩺 Exception
Power banks used to power vital medical devices are permitted subject to current approval procedures.
Lufthansa Group clarifies that lithium-ion batteries can pose a fire hazard if damaged or overheated. The restrictions are aimed at reducing risks to passengers and crew.
📘 The new rules comply with EASA, FAA, IATA, and ICAO recommendations.
✈️ The rules apply to flights of all Lufthansa Group airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Discover Airlines, Edelweiss, and Air Dolomiti.
