A.P. Moller–Maersk has begun testing ethanol as an alternative marine fuel as part of its goal to achieve net zero by 2040. Tests are underway on the container ship Laura Mærsk, where a blend of ethanol and e-methanol is being tested.
🌱 Initial results demonstrate stable engine operation without loss of reliability. Ethanol is seen as a complement to other “green” fuels due to its availability and developed infrastructure.
The company emphasizes that future maritime shipping will rely not on a single solution, but on a range of alternative fuels.
✈️ The ethanol test results do not mean an immediate fleet transition to the new fuel, but they do provide an important signal to the market and may influence future decisions in ship design, bunkering infrastructure, and crew training.
