Piracy activity has spiked again in the Gulf of Guinea. The Portuguese-flagged gas carrier CGAS Saturn was attacked by an armed group 50 nautical miles off the coast of Equatorial Guinea.

According to shipowner Christiania Gas, the pirates captured nine crew members, while four more remained on board, one of whom was slightly injured. The crew remaining on board received medical and psychological assistance. The vessel was en route to the port of Malabo.

📍 Where it happened
The area west of Mbini is one of the most dangerous areas in the Gulf of Guinea, where crew kidnappings for ransom have been reported in recent years.

📌 Despite a general decline in pirate attacks since 2021, the region remains a major hotspot for global shipping. In 2025 alone, more than a dozen armed attacks on merchant ships were recorded.

We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds. Negotiations for the return of the captured crew are already underway, but details are being withheld for security reasons.
