Today, almost 99% of all orders for new container ships are placed in just three countries: China, South Korea, and Japan.

πŸ”˜ China leads the way, controlling 73.7% of the global order book (7.36 million TEUs).
πŸ”˜ Korea holds about 20%
πŸ”˜ Japan – just over 4%
πŸ”˜ Only 29 ships are being built outside these countries – a symbolic share.

By comparison, the existing fleet presents a different picture:

🟒 50% of the ships are built in Korea,
🟒 30% in China,
🟒 10% in Japan,
🟒 10% in other countries.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Meanwhile, the US has already responded – on October 14, additional port charges were introduced on Chinese vessels as part of an investigation into China’s dominance in shipbuilding.

Chinese shipyards are becoming the main hub for container ship construction, displacing competitors and increasing global logistics’ dependence on Chinese industry. This is causing concern in the West and could lead to new trade measures.
