The Global Initiative for Decarbonizing Shipping has announced that four international “green” maritime corridors have officially reached the implementation phase. This means that infrastructure deployment, the use of low-carbon fuels, and the commissioning of new vessels are already underway along these routes.

The corridors that have reached this phase include:

  • Oslo-Rotterdam
  • Stockholm-Turku
  • Vaasa-Umeå
  • Australia-East Asia (Iron Ore Route)

The Stockholm-Turku and Vaasa-Umeå routes are already functioning as sustainable “green” routes, employing environmentally friendly solutions and continuing to expand their infrastructure.

There are currently 84 active green corridor initiatives worldwide, 25 of which emerged in the past year alone. Projects span Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Australia, demonstrating that the transition to climate-neutral shipping is becoming a global trend.

A new report from the Global Maritime Forum emphasizes the importance of the sector using the next 12 months to accelerate the adoption of green technologies, ahead of the adoption of an international framework for achieving net-zero emissions in shipping.
