A fiber optic cable providing internet connections between Lithuania and Latvia and Scandinavian countries has been damaged in the Baltic Sea, according to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Center (NCMC).

According to him, the damage was detected in Latvian territorial waters, several kilometers from the port of Liepaja.

“We have passed this information on to our Latvian colleagues, and they are currently investigating, identifying the possible perpetrator, and negotiating with the owners and crew of the specific vessel,” Vitkauskas said. The vessel’s exact involvement in the cable damage was not specified.

He added that the damage to the cable, which belongs to a private company, was detected on the evening of January 2.

✈️ On December 31, Finland reported that it had detained a vessel traveling from Russia on suspicion of damaging an underwater telecommunications cable running from Helsinki to Estonia through the Gulf of Finland. Fourteen crew members from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan were arrested.
