Two cases of Nipah virus infection have been confirmed in India (in the Kolkata area). According to the World Health Organization, no widespread transmission has been detected and the situation is under control.
⚓️Seafarers often work in South Asian ports, undergo crew changes, and transit through airports. Even localized outbreaks can lead to enhanced health screening and delays.
🔬 Some facts:
- The virus is zoonotic, with bats being the main source;
- Infection is possible through contact with animals or contaminated food;
- Mortality rate: 40–75%;
- Incubation period: up to 21 days;
- There is no vaccine or specific treatment.
🤒 Symptoms: Fever, severe headache, confusion, cough, diarrhea, vomiting.
📋 Recommendations:
🟢 Strictly maintain personal hygiene on board and in ports;
🟢 Wash and peel fruit, avoid raw food on shore;
🟢 Avoid contact with wild animals and live animal markets;
🟢 Avoid visiting farms and agricultural facilities during shore leave;
🟢 If you experience symptoms, do not hide your condition but immediately report it to ship management.
The risk to seafarers is low if basic precautions are followed, but enhanced screening may be required during flights and crew changes.
