The Danish government has submitted a bill for consideration that proposes changes to the procedure for granting temporary protection to Ukrainian citizens.
📌 What is being proposed to change
🔹 Automatic temporary protection may be terminated for new arrivals from 14 regions of Ukraine:
Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Kyiv (excluding Kyiv), Lviv, Poltava, Rivne, Ternopil, Vinnytsia, Volyn, Zakarpattia, and Zhytomyr.
This means that applications from residents of these regions will be considered on an individual basis, rather than through a simplified procedure.
👤 Special provisions for men
▪️ Men aged 23–60 may be denied a residence permit under a special law on temporary protection if there are no grounds for exemption from military service.
▪️ Men under 23 will only be able to obtain a residence permit until they reach 23 years of age. Extensions beyond this age are not permitted without additional grounds.
⚖️ Important
✔ The bill is currently under review and has not yet entered into force.
✔ The changes are planned only for new applicants.
✔ Individuals who have already received temporary protection status retain their rights.
📍 The initiative is expected to be reviewed in April.
If the changes are adopted, Denmark will become one of the first EU countries to differentiate its approach to temporary protection for Ukrainians based on the applicant’s region of origin and age.
