Check not only the issuing country but also the international conventions associated with the document. This will help you understand its legal standing and the international guarantees regarding its recognition.
2️⃣ What is the difference between ILO 108 and ILO 185?
Both conventions relate to seafarer identity documents, but they set different requirements for issuance and security features.
Before applying, verify which convention the issuing country has ratified and which one serves as the basis for your document.
3️⃣ How much time is left before your voyage?
Processing times vary depending on the document. For example, a document from Bermuda takes about 15 business days to process, while one from Panama can take around 2 months.
Factor in both processing and delivery times to ensure you have your document ready before your departure.
4️⃣ What are your company’s requirements?
Confirm with your employer or crewing agency which document meets their specific requirements. Just because a certain document was accepted for a colleague or friend does not mean it will be accepted by your own crewing agency.
