We get asked this question very often, because there’s still a lot of conflicting information surrounding certification. Many people believe that accumulating the required experience is the most important thing, and that education no longer plays a decisive role.
But in reality, it doesn’t work that way ❌
To obtain a senior mate’s certification, it’s important to meet several requirements:
✔️ Have at least 12 months of experience as a watch officer.
✔️ Meet the educational requirements. Bachelor’s, master’s, or specialist degrees are acceptable.
❌ A junior specialist diploma does not qualify you for a chief mate’s certification.
❗️There’s also an important caveat:
If you have a bachelor’s degree, you’ll also need to complete additional refresher courses.
📌 Certification is always assessed comprehensively:
— experience;
— education;
— compliance with all requirements under current legislation.
