Salvage units have completed the operation to remove residual fuel from the Defiant fuel barge, which previously grounded in the approaches to Port San Juan, Puerto Rico. The work is aimed at mitigating the risk of pollution and preparing the vessel for subsequent ditching operations.
🚢 The approximately 265-foot-long, non-self-propelled barge was towed from St. Thomas and lost control and grounded on February 9 near the entrance channel, near Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The operation is being conducted under the direction of Unified Command, with the participation of the U.S. Coast Guard and salvage contractors.
🎓 During the salvage operation, specialists completed the following:
— removal of approximately 1,000 gallons of residual fuel and oily water;
— leak testing of cargo tanks and compartments;
— pressure monitoring and hull structure condition monitoring.
🚧 The US Coast Guard has established a 200-yard safety zone around the barge. No marine pollution has been detected.
📊 The Port of San Juan is operating normally, as the barge is not blocking the navigation channel. The plan for the vessel’s removal from the ground is being finalized and awaits approval by the harbormaster.
The causes of the marine accident remain under official investigation.
