Basic certificates aren’t enough
In addition to standard maritime documents, specialized certificates are required for offshore work—and these depend on your position and vessel type.
1️⃣ PSV / AHTS without DP
No additional certificates are required—experience on this type of vessel is sufficient.
But some companies are already asking for:
🔺 H2S—working in areas with a risk of hydrogen sulfide leaks
🔺 AED—first aid with a defibrillator
Not required, but having them makes you a better candidate than other candidates.
2️⃣ Vessels with DP — for navigators
DSV, OSV, DCV, Cable ships, Drillships, PSV, AHTS
A DP operator certificate is required:
🔺 It’s extremely difficult to find employment with a Basic DP
🔺 Usually required: DP Advanced and Offshore Unlimited DP
The type of certificate depends on the vessel’s DP class and the company’s HR policy.
On tankers with DP, a separate certificate is required: Shuttle Tanker DP
3️⃣ Vessels with DP — for engineers
DSV, OSV, DCV, Cable ships, Drillships, PSV, AHTS
A DP Maintenance certificate is required for chief engineers and electrical engineers.
4️⃣ Benefit Certificates
Not mandatory, but most shipowners want to see candidates with these qualifications:
🔺BOSIET — Basic Offshore Safety Induction Emergency Training
🔺HUET — Helicopter Underwater Escape Training
🔺OGUK Medical
